The Importance of Regular Eye Exams

Eye exams are important for adults and children of all ages. As your eye doctor in Chicago and Orland Park, we help patients maintain healthy, clear vision.  Using state of the art equipment and years of training, we provide annual eye exams to the people of our community. At Wear Eyewear, we do our best to ensure that all our patients understand the value and benefit of getting annual eye exams.

Benefits of Regular Eye Exams

There are many reasons to come in for an eye exam on an annual basis. To begin with, eye exams can help your eye doctor catch eye diseases in their early stages. Since many eye diseases do not display symptoms until permanent vision loss has occurred, getting your eyes checked on a regular basis is important for protecting your vision.

In addition, comprehensive eye exams help ensure that your vision is sharp. Since clear vision is helpful for driving, reading and performing at work as well as at home, it's important to see the eye doctor regularly.

What to Expect During An Eye Exam

During your annual eye exam, your eye doctor will check your eyes for signs of disease and for visual clarity. If poor vision is detected, your eye doctor will recommend corrective lenses of the proper prescription. After running tests for diseases and vision problems, your eye doctor will also check for eye functionality like the ability to perceive color and depth. For your convenience, eye exams are painless and relatively quick.

When to Get a Regular Eye Exam

At Wear Eyewear, we recommend seeing the eye doctor at least once annually starting from about six months of age. For most patients, this is frequent enough to catch eye diseases in their beginning stages and ensure clear vision. However, some patients need to see the eye doctor more frequently.

For example, patients suffering from diabetes are at risk for diabetic retinopathy and thus may need to see the eye doctor more frequently. Your eye doctor at Wear Eyewear will let you know if you need to come in for twice-annual eye appointments.

In addition, you should see the eye doctor for an eye exam if you notice symptoms of eye trouble such as sensitivity to light, redness in the eye, eye pain, difficulty seeing, swelling, discharge or itchiness.
